AThe Minister of Transport and Minister
of Technology have jointly set up this committee consisting of experienced government officials (scientists, administrators and economists) together with representatives of national laboratories and transport authorities. Their task is to consider the whole field of transport research and make recommendations as to the additional research which they consider necessary.
The committee has been working only a few months but is already seeking ways and means of following up early recommendations. To support this committee an organization known as TRAG—Transport Research Assessment Group—has been established.
In this way the committee is seeking to join some of the vast resources of the Defence Laboratories, particularly the Royal Aircraft establishment, and of the Atomic Energy Authority to those of the Ministry of Transport's Road Research Laboratory and of British Railways. As the effort required in support of the Defence programme is reduced the committee will seek similar ways of using these national assets to help civil needs.
