must have a notice in the cab indicating the vehicle's normal travelling height.
• Since April 1998 every relevant vehicle must also be fitted with a device to warn the driver if the travelling height stated in the cab has been exceeded. The European Standard for Loader Cranes calls for an indicator to warn the operator when the crane exceeds a determined maximum.
• Since October 1998 every relevant vehicle put on the road after April 1993 must be retrofitted with an in-cab device to warn the driver if the travelling height stated in the cab has been exceeded.
Penalties The Road Safety Act 2006 increased fines for driving without due care and attention from a maximum of £2,500 to £5,000. Offences can attract three to nine penalty points or disqualification. In extreme cases prosecution could be for dangerous driving, which can include a jail sentence, a one-year ban and a retest of double the normal duration.
