A MAXIMUM-weight commercial vehicle no noisier than a modern saloon car was demonstrated at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory test track at Crowthorne, Berks, this week.
The vehicle is the result of seven years' research into the production of a quiet vehicle.
British Leyland, Foden, and RollsRoyce Motors co-operated on the pro ject and the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at Southampton University examined the basic noiseproducing components with the help of the Motor Industry Research Association and the National Engineering Laboratory.
TRRL undertook work on surface noise and in tests representing the noisiest conditions. The Rolls-Royceengined Foden emits only 81dB(A).
