A NEW low-profile sliding fifth-wheel coupling from Davies Magnet of Thundridge, Ware, Hertfordshire, is 76mm (3in) shallower than the company's previous sliding coupling. Its overall depth is 216mm (8.5in).
With the new design the trunnion brackets, in which the coupling pivots, are integrated into the sliding section which contains the locking plungers.
This assembly sits within the base frame with only the thickness of the base beneath it.
Fore and aft adjustment, like the previous sliding coupling, is across 380mm (15in) at 76mm (3in) intervals, which gives six different positions.
With the fifth wheel position selected, the coupling is locked in position by four plungers, two on each side.
The plungers are released by a pull handle similar to the fifth-wheel release but mounted on the opposite side.
