REPRESENTATIVES of about30 long-distance operators from England and Wales met 150 Scottish hoteliers at Edinburgh. last week, at a conference organized by the Scottish Tourist Board. Schemes for the further development of coaching holidays in Scotland were considered.
Mr. J. Roger Orr, of the S.T.B., said that more than 80,000 people were brought to Scotland by coach last summer and added £1m. to the Scottish economy. Many Scottish hotels had been saved during a difficult period.
The chairman of Scottish Omnibuses, Ltd., Mr. James Amos, suggested that some of the restrictions upon the use of vehicles on certaip Scottish roads be removed. These made it difficult for operators to take the larger types of coach over some highways. There were no such limitations in England, even where roads were poor.
He stated that hoteliers might try to provide more comfortable night accommodation for tourists, even to the extent of giving entertainment.
