• A second AEC tractive unit with a gross rating which anticipates revision of UK weight limits will be featured at the Scottish Motor Show. It is a two-axle V8 Mandator and the plated weight is increased from 32 to 34 tons.
Unlike the V8 Mammoth Major tractive unit for 44 tons, announced on October 10. the Mandator has the lower-power version of the 800 Series V8-247 bhp (BS gross) at 2,600 rpm and 580 lb.ft, at 1,400 rpm—and the chassis incorporates the features of the 32ton-gross version currently marketed. These include a bolted frame and 6.5-ton front axle but a more robust double reduction (spiral bevel and double helical) rear axle is used.
The Show exhibit will have a 10-speed gearbox but will not have power steering which, surprisingly, is only an option on the model, writes A. J. P. Wilding.
