that get as far as strike action and the majority of problems are resolved, if not amicably, then at least with comparatively minimal disruption to the business. An employer faced with a collective workplace dispute should take some or all of the following steps:
• Address the issues informally with workplace leaders, whether union or otherwise; • Check and apply any collective grievance procedure; • Check and apply any existing recognition agreement; • Contact ACAS to see if it will assist in reaching a resolution; • Do a risk assessment on the likelihood of strike action and the likelihood of damage to the business;
0 Prepare a strike response plan such as getting managers to cover essential jobs and liaising with customers whose services may be disrupted.
If industrial action is workplace war, then it is hardly surprising that it is often difficult to find a "winner". Effective industrial action damages the business but if the business is damaged then it Is both employer and employees who suffer. It is important that both sides listen when problems arise so that industrial issues can be resolved by consultation rather than confrontation.
