ONE OF the potential builders of a Channel tunnel said last week that it could find all £900m required for the project from private sector funds.
The European Channel Tunnel Group, a consortium of French, West German, Netherlands, and British civil engineering companies, said that its financing plan — evolved by merchant bankers Rothschild — would need no direct Government guarantees.
But it would require the Government accepting political risks, such as the cancellation of the project.
