• Scania is introducing independent front suspension on the Van Hool-bodied Astrobel double-decker, giving a smoother ride and more room at the front end.
The change from a beam axle allows a lower gangway and improved access between the driver/courier area and the passenger compartment — the space can be used to increase storage or add seats.
Independent front suspension is not entirely new — it is already available on NeapLan — but it will add to the coach's popularity.
Scania is also offering a new high power rating on its Continental coaches, up from 271kW (363hp) to 284kW (381hp), fitted with electronic diesel control (EDC), which is already available on top-of-the-range trucks.
Scania expects that tax benefits for operators running environment-friendly coaches will be introduced in several European countries. EDC will help engines to achieve low emissions while maintaining good fuel returns.
Other changes due on Scania coaches this autumn include revised dashboard and instruments, different fuel tanks, and new, larger air cleaners which need less changing.
Scania has put on hold plans to bring its new premium bus to the UK. The bus, which has a 320mm-high deck for two thirds of the length of the vehicle, "will come in right-hand-drive form when the market can afford it; it cannot afford the most simple chassis at the moment".
However, the company has revealed that it is discussing a full contract-hire agreement with a bus fleet operator. The customer is considering whether or not its engineering overheads are justified, says Scania. Contract hire, including maintenance, is virtually unheard of in the UK bus industry but could become popular in the longterm, Scania believes.
