• The Scottish Traffic Commissioners last week granted permission to Harper Hiring (U.K.) Express Ltd, to start a minibus service to carry workers between Blantyre and the Inland Revenue offices at East Kilbride, Lanarkshire.
Central SMT Company, operator of bus services between the two towns, had objected to the application on the grounds that it would take away some of its custom and result in wasteful and unnecessary competition.
The workers said in a letter to the Commissioners that they had to get up at 6.45 am if they were to be at their desks at 8 am; it also took them an hour to get home.
One of two workers giving evidence alleged that the SMT service was unreliable, and that buses often arrived full. The other man said he had to get a connecting service to reach the bus to East Kilbride; he estimated the proposed minibus service would take 20 minutes of his travelling time in the morning.
