FORD is to launch a Japanese-built light van called the Econov an in selected European markets in the autumn, but not in Britain.
The new van, which has a payload of 800kg (15.8cwt) will be built by Mazda and imported into Denmark, Norway and West Germany by Ford of Japan.
It is expected to fill the gap between the existing Fiesta and Escort car-derived van range and the Transit van. Three versions will be offered consisting of van, combi ;Ind minibus with a choice of petrol or diesel engines.
Versions of the Econovan, which is assembled by Mazda but badge(' as a Ford are already in production in Japan and are sold in Japan, New; Zealand and Australia.
Ford currently holds a 25 per cent share in Mazda, The European specification Econovan is understood to have a conventional rearwheel drive layout.
A Ford of Britain .spokesman has said that there is no possibility of a Fordbadged Econovan being sold in the UK.
