CAP's senior editor, commercial vehicles, Looks at used van prices through October, and assesses where residual values have increased, remain static or fallen

The October CAP price guide reflects a relatively slack period in terms of auctions sales.
There were only slight increases in attendance levels and marginal improvements in the sales conversion rates that took place during the August holiday period.
In all, October book prices were down by around 2%.
As the market heads into November, average performance against guide by was down again by around 3%, despite much healthier auction attendance levels and marginal improvements in conversion rates.
With strong evidence of dealers buying for stock and an increase in the number of damaged and high-mileage vehicles offered for sale, the market is seeing more price spikes as buyers compete for the better quality vehicles.
Car-derived vans
The early model Ford Fiesta van fell by around 2%, while younger models dipped sharply during September only to recover during October.
Despite significant downward movements of the guide prices over the past two months, Vauxhall Astravan 1.3-litre variants continue to underperforrn with average prices hovering around 6% below CAP Average against the November guide.
Light van and sub-2.0 tonnes
Old model Citroen Berlingo prices strengthened during October, resulting in a 5% increase in the November edition. De-fleeted Vauxhall Combos dominate this sector and, following adjustments made to the guide prices in previous editions, the market price now appears to have stabilised with average performance around 100% of the CAP guide.
Vans from 2.6 tonnes to 3.5 tonnes
Prices have slipped in previous months largely due to the vast number of very poor quality vehicles presented for sale.
However, research reveals that demand for clean examples remains strong. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter prices increased on average by around 5%, mainly due to re-alignment with other models. Prices of Renault Master 2003 models have been falling for the past few months and show no signs of recovering. resulting in a 5% reduction in prices to reflect the current market, and Volkswagen Transporter prices increased by 4% to reflect current demand.
Prices for the Vauxhall Vivaro have fallen on average by around 4% as the CAP guide prices have been re-aligned to the current market trend, which is believed to be a combination of over-supply and the poor quality of vehicles being presented for sale.
AWD Pick ups
Prices have been relatively stable over the past few months with Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi L200 models dominating the sector and prices fluctuating between 98% and 100% of the guide.
The most significant market price increases have been experienced by the Ford Ranger, which appears to fluctuate more than any other model in this sector. •
