TRANSPORT Secretary David Howell is to receive evidence of brit ery by British lorry drivers travelling in Europe. The Labour MP fa Ipswich, Mr K. Weetch has compiled a list of cases supplied b. drivers in his constituency.
Mr Weetch's evidence lists inducements of money gifts of up to £15 and cartons of cigarettes or bottles of spirits. He lisl France, Italy, Spain and Turks as the major countries involve Mr Weetch goes as far as I claim that if drivers are unable offer inducements they can hay their T1R seals broken and n sealed after part of the load ha been removed.
The type of incidents whic can be overcome by bribery i addition to border delays ar speeding, overweight offence or carrying more than th permitted amount of fuel in th tank at borders.
A Road Haulage Associatio Eastern Area spokesman said h was aware of the practice but fe it was not as widespread as IV Weetch was suggesting.
