ENCOURAGING experiments are being conducted by Barton Transport, Ltd., Beeston, Notts, with a compression-ignition engine employing only one valve, which performs the two operations of admitting air and allowing the escape of the products of combustion. An accompanying diagram shows the arrangement of the cylinder head. but it is not clear what precautions are taken to prevent the re-entry of gas from the exhaust outlet on the induction stroke.
Among the advantages claimed for the design are the fewer parts required, the fact that the engine can easily be adapted for supercharging or air cooling, its compactness, lightness, and the facility with which a means for varying the size of the combustion chamber can be incorporated. The company which is responsible for the design is optimistic of its success and economy, having already obtained results which lead it to expect equal power and speed to those which are obtained from a conventional engine of the two-valve type.
