PATENT No. 903,361 refers to engines employing pre-combustion chambers having a heat-insulating lining. In such engines, the heating of the charge should commence as soon as possible after starting and this calls for a lining of low thermal capacity. Such a lining forms the subject of the patent. (The Rover Co. Ltd., Meteor Works, Solihull, Warwickshire.) A typical arrangement is shown in the drawing; the upper part of the spherical chamber is lined with a thin sheet-metal hemisphere (I). The lower half is similarly lined, but in this case a thin tube (2) forms part of it, to connect with the
cylinder space. This half is surrounded by a shaped plug (3) of heat insulating material.
The sheet-metal shells are a little smaller than the chamber, thus forming a narrow air-space all around them. The hemispheres are flanged at the middle to form a clamping surface which is loaded when the head is bolted down.
A feature of the scheme is the protrusion of the tube into the pre-combustion chamber at (4). This is stated to create turbulence.
The patent shows four other arrangements based on the same principle, including one of the direct-injection layout.
