Agency drivers involved in the transport of milk in Devon say work is drying up as the effects of foot-and-mouth begin to tell.
"There's just no milk work for agency drivers in the area," says one local driver. But the Exeter-based agency Drivers believes the downturn has more to do with seasonal fluctuations than with the foot-and-mouth crisis.
"We're not mad busy, that's true," says Drivers' owner Phil Stamp. "But work is still there--I think drivers like to make up stories."
Fertiliser deliveries have also been hit by the disease, Frank Stears says Stears Haulage was transporting around 1,000 tonnes of fertiliser a month this time last year and now just 100 tonnes.
Haulier Derek Linch of Romney Marsh, Kent, reports a similar downturn in fertiliser volumes. "We were handling about 2,000 tonnes a month last year but we are down to 200 or 300," he says.
