• A new £3rn passenger and vehicle ferry, the mv St. George, described as the most advanced ship of her kind to be built in Britain, made her first regular sailing for British Railways an the Harwich to the Hook of Holland run last week.
The introduction of this vessel into the BR fleet provides drive-on /drive-off facilities on this route for the first time.
The 7,356 ton Sr. George is a bow and
stern loader with space for 220 cars or up to 32 commercial vehicles and 80 cars. Vehicles are driven through the length of the ship, embarking at one end and disembarking at the other.
Charges for transporting commercial vehicles are: trucks, 22s per linear foot; trailers, 32s per linear foot.
Containers will not be carried on the ship other than on vehicles, since there is no lifting gear at the Hook of Holland.
