• Following the conclusion of London Transport's productivity agreement with its 33,000 busmen (CM last week), the Board has announced that 257 additional buses will be ordered, for delivery in the latter part of next year. London Transport already has 600 AEC Merlins with MCVV o-m-o bodywork in course of delivery. Many of these single-deckers are designed for multi-standing operation.
The majority of the additional buses will also be single deckers and will enable LTB to press ahead with its radical bus reshaping plan. However, 46 of the new vehicles will be double-deckers and will be the first in the London Transport fleet specially designed for full-time one-man operation. They will have a front entrance and separate central exit.
The central (red) bus fleet will receive 167 of the additional buses, the remaining 90 being destined for operation in the (green) country bus area.
