• Employment prospects over the next three months will be at their lowest level in transport for a decade, according to an authoritative labour market survey.
The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey shows that the transport, storage and communications sector has the gloomiest outlook of all eight sectors covered.
Between July and September, the balance of employers in this sector expecting to take on staff is minus 5%.
Manpower says this suggests that surveyed companies plan to decrease the number of staff on their books. The national average is plus 13%.
The survey, which is widely used in government and industry, states: "This is the lowest third quarter net employment outlook for transport and communications in 10 years and it is also one of the few times that the sector has recorded a negative result in that time."
Manpower, which is the largest supplier of agency drivers in the UK, believes that prospects will pick up towards the end of the year.
Andrew Blakesley, director of the company's driving and technical division, says: "There was a fall In driving staff required at the tall end of the second quarter and the survey indicates that prospects remain low.
"However, the latter part of the year is looking positive for our driving business, with requirements expected to grow in line with seasonal trends."
He adds that there is still a huge shortage of drivers across the UK.
The survey is based on 2,500 interviews with public and private sector employers.
