• Trailer maker and bodybuilder Wilcox has added its own weight to the "great dumping debate" (CM 19-25 June) by Jnsisting that any operator raising the body of a fully-laden tipping trailer with the bogie's air suspension deflated is likely to seriously overload the rearmost axle well beyond the manufacturer's design limits.
Wilcox joint owner Vito Ronzano says: 'There's no question, if you dump the air from the suspension while you're tipping, you're putting between 20-24 tonnes through the rear axle that's designed to have nine. And if you're Upping on soft ground and putting that weight through the last two wheels you won't stand a chance in hell of stopping it going over." And he adds that those who advocate tipping with the suspension deflated "had better uprate the axles and tyres!'
Having previously held back from entering the debate, Ronzano says: "l'm prepared to go with anybody and any manufacturer and run like-for-like tests at Chobham [home of the Qinetiq tilt table] and prove it. We'll see which one performs the best."
Ronzano reports that Wilcox has already conducted a number of its own stability tests, all with the Wilcox trailers' suspension inflated.
