Saviem's contribution to the European " club " range of medium-weight vehicles, the J series, is being used as the basis for a new all-wheel-drive unit now under development by 1 Sinpar.
The "poor man's Unimog " will have the standard " club " cab with an altered grille and twin headlamps incorporated in the front bumper. The vehicle, In several payload versions, will compete with established Mercedes-Benz models and the recently-announced Fiat/OM 4x4 range.
Good progress is also reported by Steyr, in Austria, on the design stage for a prototype of a new light cross-country vehicle — of Range Rover size — in which Daimler-Benz is expected to take a major interest. An annual production of around 10,000 units is envisaged ; this opens up new potential for the Austrian maker whose current capacity is around 4,500 trucks a year.
