Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE POST OFFICE is planning European freight services.

It has been building up its network over the past two years, and now feels strong enough to take a higher profile in the market.

The operation uses the Post Office's collection vehicles in Britain, private forwarders for trunking and local hauliers for deliveries in Europe. Foreign postal services are also used for delivery. The services are almost entirely road based, and use established operators such as MAT to Germany.

Existing destinations are Ireland, Belgium, France, Italy, Luxem bo u rg, the Netherlands, Switzerland and West Germany, with Denmark, Spain and Scandinavia to be added this year. There is a pallet weight limit of one tonne.

Meanwhile express carrier TNT Ipec is to expand its next day door-to-door services into the Netherlands, Belgium and Paris, from most parts of Britain, marketing manager Doug Fell said last week. The service will be largely lorry-based, he said.

Finland, Norway and Denmark will join the TNT lpec express network in the next few months.

• British Caledonian Airways says that during 1983 freight carried on its lorries rose by one third as it developed its road network.
