Take a stroll with us through the little sideroads of -iaulage, the diversions and detours, the quirky, the quixotic and the downright strange...
_ike the reason people give for climbing Everest ("because t's there") the most obvious excuse for doing something daft s probably best explained by the equally simple expression: 'because I can".
Owner-driver Dave Binning appears to approach life in nuch the same way. At 3pm on Saturday 6 August he plans to • everse his Renault Magnum 420 and curtainsider trailer down Dheddar Gorge. Why? Well, er... because he can. Or to use is own words: "Because I'm a nutter!" But he's surely no more pf a nutter than those members of the ocal police and highway authorities Nho are supporting the stunt by '..losing the road and allowing him :0 do it. A local police sergeant old Binning: "It's never been done before and it will never De done again. We don't Nant it to become a regular :.,ompetition.” Judging by Binning's description of the road :here's little chance of a repeat performance certainly not by any Df CM'S roadtesters.
a,ccording to Binning: "It's twisting as nell — I could do it on -ny own no problem but with people Natching that's where the problem will be."
In case you're wondering if Binning is some kind of Tiasochist, rest assured he's doing it for a good reason — and io, we don't mean providing local recovery operators with a Tiouth watering treat on a summer weekend. In fact Binning's Dig back-up is designed to raise £6,000 for Weston-super-Mare -lospital and a new lifesigns machine.
But who on earth thought of doing it in the first place?
Binning admits that it started from a conversation in a pub :doesn't it always?) involving a similar exercise — reversing an artic round unfeasibly small roads—in Ireland: "Then someone 3aid: 'If you're going to back one on a tight road how about Theddar Gorge?"
If you fancy giving up some money for what's clearly a good pause e-mail him on dave@binning7.fsiife.co.uk or call him on J7768 927213.
All the money will go direct to a local paper which is arranging the collection.
