HGVs ARE still speeding in vast numbers, according to the Department for Transport's 2004 National Statistics of Vehicle Speeds.
The report says 49% of two-axle HG Vs exceeded the speed limit on 30mph roads; 18% of them by more than 5mph. However, this is a reduction from the 2003 levels of 53% and 21% respectively.
On 40mph single-carriageway roads, 78% of artics broke the limit;28% more than lOmph.Their average speed on these roads was 46mph, just 2mph less than the average speed of cars.
