Laurie Dealer watched incredu
lously as an 18-tonner, with six demount box-van bodies, took centre stage at a recent respectable northern auction. Used to help a county council restore its many derelict houses by delivering and dropping bodies full of doubleglazing and radiators to building sites, the truck had cost six figures brand new less than a year before.
Rumour had it that it had taken longer to spec, build and deliver than it spent being used in anger. Its mileage was the equivalent of an old lady living in the flat above the one shop she visited once a month for supplies – zero kilometres. At auction, it sold for little more than £30,000 – less than a sixth of its new purchase price – to an end user. Laurie Dealer rests his case.
