Monaghan-based operator Stanley Lowey told CM how invoking the magazine’s name can be enough to get a repair bill slashed. He has a brisk business, Lowey Transport, which delivers chickens to England. En route to Liverpool, one of his vehicles was recently stopped by a VOSA officer and the indicator on the left-hand side was not working.
VOSA escorted the driver to a dealer where a temporary repair involving a “bit of wire” was made, after apparently working on the unit from 12 noon to 7pm. Lowey was shocked to be presented with a bill for a whopping £485. “I rang them and asked what kind of mechanic they had. I told them I could have repaired it in 15 minutes,” he said, “I threatened to get Commercial Motor onto it – at that point they refunded my money.” Job done!
