• The Department of the Environment is recommending that goods vehicles not exceeding 30cwt ulw and vehicles drawing trailers should be restricted to the two inner lanes on all motorways. This will include four-lane motorways.
The present restriction applies to vehicles not exceeding 3 tons ulw. The Department says that the recommendations are designed to bring UK rules into line with European legislation which restricts vehicles of 3.5 metric tons gvw and vehicle combinations exceeding 7 metres in length.
The initial reaction of the FTA is one of opposition to the proposals. A spokesman for the Association told CM this week: "Our opposition is based on the fact that the Department does not give any good reason for the restriction." He went on to point out that the new weight limits would have far reaching effects on vehicle movements.
