THIS industry of ours has seen many changes over the years, but one part of the establishment that remains constant is the brass band.
The Foden Motor Works Band, which I thrilled to as a schoolboy — not yesterday, I admit — is still giving pleasure, and visitors to the Public Works Exhibition at the NEC heard it again last week.
Formed at the turn of the century, they have been national champions eleven times — different bandsmen, of course — and all have been, or are, employed at Fodens.

This week I heard that Bendix Westinghouse of Bristol, who are in the air freight business in a big way, have taken over the Kingswood Brass Band, now to be known as the Bendix Westinghouse Kingswood Brass Band.
I wonder if they'll have to submit to competition scrutineers in future to ensure that there are no hidden air reservoirs under their tubas.
