• The Spanish want a -Europewide policy on bail and legal aid after the acquittal of British truck driver Roy Clarke on drug smuggling charges.
Spain holds the Presidency of the European Union and says it wants "harmonisation" of criminal justice policy throughout Europe. The issue will be discussed at November's meeting of European Justice and Interior Ministers.
But the United Road Transport Union, which campaigned on Clarke's behalf and has been critical of the Spanish, says: This is the responsible line for the Spanish to take, but it could be to try to defuse the situation in the wake of the Clarke case."
