• A fall in commercial vehicle production is a clear sign that demand is levelling off for the first time since the end of the recession, according to a motor industry expert. Output of vans and LGVs was 20,163 in September—a 2.9" reduction on the same period in 1994. It was the first monthly reduction since January 1994. Dr Paul Nieuwenhuis of Cardiff Business School's centre for automotive research, says: "There won't be such steep rises as we have seen in the past couple of years. This is probably the first indication of a levelling oFI."
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, says the fall could be explained as "a market pausing for breath. We would need figures over two to three months before we detect any trends."
In the first nine months of this year CV production reached 183,691, 11% up on the same period last year.
