• A disgruntled driver socked for absenteeism by Portsmouth-based Vanguard Engineering returned to the yard the next day and using a 20-tonne crane left a trail of destruction that will cost the firm £500,000.
The unnamed driver was later arrested wandering around the sheets of Portsmouth shouting about the damage he had done. Earlier in the day, he had threatened the firm's managing director on the telephone and told him he'd annihilate the yard.
Four lorries, a van and a site cabin were all reversed into and the cost of replacing the vehicles has been estimated at £500,000.
Vanguard says it fired the man because he had not been turning up for work every day. "He had been a good worker since he joined us in April, but started taking days off," a spokeswoman says. The firm was able to keep operating as vehicles were being loaned from the London branch.
