AThis particular wage differential origi
nated from an inquiry held in January 1966 as a result of which the official arbitrator appointed by the Ministry of Labour awarded a 30s a week wage increase to drivers employed by the Stetchford haulage firm, Millichamp Haulage Ltd„ who had previously staged an 11-week strike in support of a pay claim. The drivers were claiming a E2 differential to counteract high living costs in the city. The claim caused national concern among members of the RHA who feared it would be followed by similar claims in other cities.
The award to Millicharnp's drivers was followed by a 15 per cent award by the arbitrator to drivers of Frank Grounds Ltd.. of Birmingham, for 30 mph operating.
The arbitration ruling was not intended to be taken as a general guide for wage levels in Birmingham but over the intervening period most haulage contractors in the Birmingham area have negotiated increases to fall in line with these awards.
Amendments have been made since the original awards to cover 40 mph operation and other increases.
