to 31 August 1996 more than 4,000 Volvos—some 10% of the parcunderwent a free environmental check in a Volvo distributor or dealer workshop.
The seven-point Greencheck took about an hour, including an exhaust smoke test. Vehicles which passed were issued with a distinctive windscreen sticker carrying the date of the test, and indicating when the next one was due. The bad news is that the check is no longer free—the good news is that Volvo outlets will still carry it out, although they will make a modest charge. The Vehicle Inspectorate has now introduced modified smoke tests for all diesel engine vehicles. The limits have been reduced from 3.7m-1 to 3.0mfor turbocharged engines, and from 3.2m-1 to 2.5-1 for naturally-aspirated ones. The MoT limits ore the same as those set for roadside tests. Fortunately all Volvo distributors, and almost all dealers, now have smoke meters and can carry out a pre-MoT check.
