• Dozens of new drivers' jobs are set to be created with the opening of a new distribution centre in Essex.
Businessman Peter Davis is setting up the depot at Chelmsford after going into partnership with Turkish biscuit and confectionery manufacturer 'Aker of Istanbul.
Between 150 and 280 jobs will be created initially—many of them for drivers—with more than 1,000 on the horizon as the project expands.
Davis says he chose Chelmsford because of its ideal position for import-export routes to Turkey and for access to London and Scandinavia. He reckons the distribution depot could eventually become a biscuit factory employing up to 1,500 people. "I expect if everything goes well to be turning over 5rii within three years and have come to an arrangement to manufacture and distribute the products from Chelmsford," he says.
The distribution centre will be based at the Widford Industrial Estate in Chelmsford.
