• The Freight Transport Association (FTA) is warning that the delay in introducing smart-card digital tachographs will seriously damage the case for simplifying the drivers hours' regulations.
Digital tacho introduction is to be delayed by at least six months after glitches in the technical specification were found. But delays are likely to be much longer than this, as the European Parliament and Council must agree changes to the official text of the specification.

"If the introduction sit go ahead, there's no case argued for changing di hours' rules," says the as tion's Scottish regional din Bob Armstrong.
"It's taken a very long for drivers hours' regulate be understood and interpr If we change them, ever moderately, we will be bac period of uncertainty."
The FTA is calling on ti to make minimal changes, But the International Transport Union (IRU) sayE can't build tachograph accordance with the tec specification, and this nes be changed."
