• A German truck driver has been jailed for eight years at Canterbury Crown Court for importing cannabis with an estimated street value of 21.5m.
The driver, Jurgen Paternoga, arrived in Dover from Zeebrugge last October, and was stopped by Customs officers at the Eastern Docks. A search of his vehicle and load—said to contain foil and bags—revealed three pallets of boxes at the rear of the trailer bulkhead which were found to contain 294kg of herbal cannabis and 296kg of cannabis resin.
Customs spokesman Nigel Knott says this is a very significant find. "The sentence reflects the court's view of the severity of this offence, and should act as a warning to any other drug smuggler."
