Peter Birchall and his wife have crossed the Sahara in a Russian UAZ 452 four-wheel-drive van and were last reported in Nigeria heading south. They bought the vehicle from UMO Plant Ltd, Doncaster, after a chance visit followed up by a trip to that company's Letchworth depot to confirm that large quantities of spare parts and built-up units are kept for immediate shipment to customers. Mr and Mrs Birchall had wanted to go on a Safari trip for years. The van has a 2,445cc four-cylinder ohv petrol engine and a high-low four-speed gearbox giving eight forward and two reverse gears with synchromesh on the third and fourth. It runs on two-star fuel.
