Lots of people take part ir sponsored bike rides, but there are few intrepid souls who would voluntarily pedal through 335km of the most rugged terrain Iceland has to offer. The Hawk came across one such dauntless fellow while perusing a copy of the T&G Record. David McKay, a P&O TransEuropean driver, will set out in August to cycle in the RNLI's Icelandic Challenge 2000 to raise funds for lifeboats. David, who is a T&G member, now lives in London, but his grandfather and great-grandfather both served as volunteer lifeboat crewmen in his home town of Anstruther in Scotland.
"Cycling across lava fields one minute and glaciers the next promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Through my efforts I hope to raise a few thousand pounds for the lifeboats," says David. To sponsor him contact: 020 88813179.
