• A pilot truck management scheme will be introduced in the autumn in a bid to reduce congestion around Dover during peak boarding times.
Trucks will be diverted from the A20, sent up Jubilee Way to Gaston roundabout and chan
nelled back into a moving queue into the port.
The Highways Agency, Dover District Council, Kent Police and Dover Harbour Board devised the scheme, with the Port of Dover Police providing officers to manage the traffic. Jubilee Way will remain open to local traffic but drivers will be encouraged to take different routes if they are not entering the terminal.
Port police Chief Officer Keith Homan says the experimental scheme will not replace the M20 Operation Stack, which is used to cope with serious problems on cross-Channel operations or the Channel Tunnel. However, the group is considering using a section of the A20 near Aycliffe as a medium-term stacKing solution before deploying the Full M20 Operation Stack.
