The kit system differs by rationalising the designs and producing them in component form, consisting of front, sides, ends, roofs, and sub frame, by a flowline system.
Because of relatively high output of a standard design, the kit manufacturers can economically install machinery, which a traditional bodybuilder could not justify, and so reduce the construction of a boxvan on a chassis to a semi-skilled operation.
Although taking fewer man hours to produce, the kit body is said to be of a higher quality than a traditionally built boxvan.
Kit bodies are unlikely to replace the traditional build, says Eurokit, because of the high proportion of specials which are always in demand. But, in the USA, kit bodies have a market share well in excess of 50 per cent. At present in Britain, the kit share is said to be 11 per cent of an approximate market of 46,000 box vans.
