A NEW means of heating bearings (or any other interference fit steel ring) is now offered by the Lewis Electric Group of Maidenhead, Berkshire.
The component to be heated fits over an armature in which a magnetic current is induced. The bearing becomes part of the induction circuit and is heated to the required temperature in a matter of seconds, says Lewis, although the armature itself does not heat up.
Portable 110V or 240V 3kW Speedfit models are available as well as permanently sited 415V units with an output of 8kW.
Retail price of the basic 240V model is £349 but offers advantages over more traditional methods of bearing fitting such as hot oil bath or cold fitting using a hammer and drift.
