THE threatened strike of Scottish road haulage workers has been called off. Mr. Alex Kitson, general secretary of the Scottish Horse and Motormen's Association,• announced this at the annual conference in Dunoon last week.
He said that the Road Haulage Association had agreed to meet representatives of both sides of the industry, to examine the union claims for improved pay and conditions.
The conference unanimously called for the nationalization of road transport and integration of the country's transport system. It also voted in favour of talks with other trade unions in the transport industry to see where integration or amalgamation might be possible.
Mr. Kitson made it clear that his union had no intention of being swallowed up by the Transport and General Workers' Union, which he called "a hybrid organization ", but was in favour of one union for all road transport workers.
