EMPLOYERS who do not communicate with their staff will be more prone to strikes and industrial action, Jackson Moore, general secretary of the United Road Transport Union, told a Freight Transport Association meeting last week.
The theme of his lengthy speech was "Communications". "It is a two-way operation and should entail a frank exchange of views," he explained. The employer who has regular talks and discussions with his workers should be able to solve problems before they really get under way.
"Increased productivity should not mean a reduction in jobs," he stressed. When management and staff can sit around a table and talk on a regular basis, productivity will improve.
Facts and figures about the company and its dealings should be readily available to staff and employers alike, Mr Moore underlined, as this will also improve communications.
"Extremist groups that are sometimes found in companies cause great problems for the unions," he said. "There is no real solution to these groups. They have to be tolerated."
