• T he Department of Transport predicts that traffic levels will rise by as much as 87% by the year 2025—but by the turn of the century road spending will
be more than 20% down on 1995 levels.
In its annual report the DOT says that without unexpected changes in behaviour, traffic levels will rise by up to between 1995 and 2000. Over the same period, total net roads spending is set to fall from 1:2.04bn to C1.5bn.
The report concludes that making the most of the existing
network is essential. To this end the DOT plans to develop the use of traffic management tools such as "intelligent" pedestrian crossings to help local authorities improve traffic flows.
Getting better information on congestion blackspots to drivers more quickly will also help alleviate the problem, it says.
FT According to the same DOT report, international goods transport earns the UK more than £500m a year.
