Staff on the Vehicle inspectorate stand says they and other groups dealing with tachographs and speed limiters had experienced a "very busy" few days at the show—all as a result of the introduction of speed limiter testing on 14 February 1CM 20-26 March I.
The VI's Gary Washer says the degree of activity suggested operators were looking closely at speed limiters. "It confirms the information we have that a high proportion [of speed limiters] were working incorrectly."
An initial snapshot study undertaken by the VI suggested that 28% of limiters were faulty. It did the study to find a baseline, says Washer; if 28% of trucks were to fail the tests, the VI would need to consider test centre capacity. "We have tried to give people as much notice as possible, and it looks as if operators are preparing themselves for this," he says.
