• Scottish mobile solutions specialist Justfone is launching a new tracking service based on nothing more than the use of a standard mobile phone. The Fonetrack service, believed to be the first of its kind in the UK, will allow 02 customers to locate and track any standard GSM phones on their account.
Possible applications for the new service include vehicle tracking and fleet management, along with scheduling of sales teams or service engineers and monitoring of lone workers.
Steve Brown, managing director at Justfone, says: For many businesses, tracking the location of individuals or vehi
des using a global positioning satellite (GPS) based system is prohibitively expensive. This is radically different, in that the base hardware is the user's existing mobile phone, which makes it a much more cost-effective option."
All a company has to do is register its employees' current phones on the system to get up and running, and Brown estimates the monthly running costs of the system will be "less than haft' of the costs of an equivalent GPS-based system. Users will be able to access location information via a website, or via WAP and personal digital assistant-based applications.
Although initially available only on the 02 network, it should be extended to cover all major mobile phone service providers by the end of this year, adds Brown.
