Day Aggregate's 40-strong fleet comprises mainly two and four-axled tipper trucks plus a couple of six-wheelers. It hauls aggregates around London and the South-East from its Brentford base, and 10 regional sites. 'The fleet's mainly Volvo, seine Scanias and a few Mercedes 4x2s, but they all have automatic roll-over sheeting systems,' says transport manager Chris Driscoll.
Even a novel 8x4 tipper-cumdropsided grab-loader has a specially-modified roller sheet. Driscoll strongly believes that electrically-operated sheets should be a legal requirement to stop drivers climbing over trucks.
It would certainly focus the thoughts of certain owner-driver subbies who splash out on new tippers with just a basic tarpaulin. "Even then, they can't always be bothered to use them," says Driscoll. "They'll risk their health. and getting stopped toodust to save a few quid—it's quite ridiculous."
Day specifies Thompson steel bodies, PPG aluminium ones and Transcover flip-sheets on them all as standard equipment.
