THE ROAD HAULAGE Modernisation Fund has spent Lim on a truck simulator, which opened last week with a "test drive" by 11ansport Secretary Alistair Darling.
Based at TRL in Berkshire, the simulator will go through three months of trials before its launch into the world of commercial training. TRL is seeking 600 truck drivers to assess the simulator.
It expects commercial companies to use the simulator to assess experienced and new drivers, as well as complying with new leg islation. TRL and its commercial training partner on the venture, J Coates, have yet to announce a price for its use.
It's based on a Mercedes-Benz Actros day cab with an eight-speed box, and has a 210° screen onto which the routes are projected. The screen works in tandem with the movement system in the simulator, so potholes appearing on the road on screen are felt. It has six types of movement — heave, pitch, roll, surge, sway — to replicate the feel of bends and various loads.
