-91ADENCE of the excellent work V which continues to be accomplished in connection with the activities of the East Midlands Division of the Commercial Motor Users Association was again forthcoming at the seventh annual parade of vehicles held on Saturday, September 17th, upon Nottingham's picturesque riverside esplanade, the Victoria Embankment. Admirable arrangements had been made by the committee

of which Mr. C. Davenport is chairman, the secretarial duties being fulfilled, as for many years past, by Mr. J. H. Trees°.

The judges were Messrs. F. IL Bassano, H. A. Bennett, F. G. Bristow, V. 13. Butt, G. Caudle, H. Grocock, P. Hutchinson, A. E. Knowles, S. Leatherbarrow and G. C. Young. The duties of chief marshal were fulfilled by Mr. V. D. Thomas, who was assisted by Messrs. A. Carson, C. N. Cullen, R. S. Dawson, R. Hunt and J. Southworth. Preliminary to the judging, a representative company, including the Sheriff of Nottingham (Mr. J. Hopkin), who afterwards distributed the prizes, assembled at a luncheon, when, in response to the principal toast, Mr. F. G. Bristow, general secretary of the C.M.U.A., referred to the fact that commercial motor users contributed eight million pounds last year to the national exchequer for road purposes, and in the course of the next year it was estimated that 11 millions would be contributed by them, it being, in his opinion, not an exaggerated computation to suggest that the total might ultimately reach 15 millions. A serious situation, Mr. Bristow pertinently added, had been created in many parts of the country through the failure of .railway and canal-owning companies to make their bridges commensurate with the requirements of present-day traffic. It would, he said, continue to be

• the dominant aim of the Association to see that commercial motdr interests were not jeopardized by the action of railway companies. There was room for both road and rail systems of trans port in this country, and those who preferred the more expeditious means afforded by road service were entitled to adequate recognition.
