III Tighter control over van and car hire werators is being sought by Mr Robert VIcCrindle, Tory MP for Billericay.
His plea for new legislation to govern the :onditions under which self-drive hire firms )perate follows complaints about the defects Ind poor maintenance of vehicles.
"I want the Minister for Transport ndustries to require a certificate of road
worthiness to be displayed in a prominent place on the dashboard of any vehicle hired,said M r McCrindle.
This should be applicable to commercial vehicles as well as cars, he added.
"The test for vehicles available for hire should he l'ar more stringent than the usual MoT test for private cars," he said.
Following a probing question to ascertain the Minister's attitude. Mr McCrindle intends to write to Mr Peyton setting out details of his proposals for legislation.
